This is not that old of a Colt but what is significant is the history behind it. Not only was he big in his field but very big in presence being a very very large man at 600+ pounds. An unforgettable figure. This Colt was ordered by Mr. Chernoff and he had it inscribed at Colt in 1967 to Don Stika. Stika was also an important figure in the early gun dealing days. C1823 FANTASTIC PAIR OF FACTORY ENGRAVED IDENTICALLY PREPARED BLACK POWDER COLT SINGLE ACTIONS
Item # C1823 -26-722
Cal 45. Elaborately engraved by Helfriech I believe. Beautifully done. Complete with matched Mother of Pearl carved grips with a buffalo on the left of one and right of the other. A lady is carved on each opposing side. Very nicely done and something I have not seen before on a Colt. Guaranteed correct and have been in a number of high profile collections. Tom Seymore of Texas and Larry Sheridan being a couple of them. Complete with Factory Letter stating 2 guns shipped in a batch to order. 7-1/2" bbls, silver finish, pearl grips, factory engraved and shipped to William Nelson on Sept 30, 1884. One gun is in the 95k serial range and the other in 111k range. Major William Nelson grew up in Evansville, Indiana. As a young man he moved to Oklahoma territory. He was a clerk of court and became involved in real estate and did well apparently since he purchased these Colts. There is quite a lot of paperwork with these giving details of the Major's life. Very interesting. One of the finest pair of Colts in the country. One has seen a little more use than the other but both are in excellent cond. One has a repaired crack on the grip that was nicely done. Mechanics are crisp and tight. To find a matched set of black powder single actions with silver finish is nearly unheard of. Guaranteed to please!
Antique $ 95,000.
C1736 EXTREMELY RARE COLT EXHIBITION ENGRAVED PANEL NICKEL PLATED SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER
Item # C1736-24-528
Cal 45. 7-1/2" bbl. Checkered ivory grips of which appear to be replacements by the ill fit. Overall gun is elaborately and delicately engraved by Augustus Friedrich Ulrich who is known to have done a number of the panel scene guns. There is only 6-7 of them known. Quite elaborately engraved with about 75-80% coverage. Panel scene of a bear being shot by a hunter on one side of the frame and a dog and wildlife scene on the other. On top of the backstrap is a mounted Indian with full headdress. Gun is in beautiful shape with most orig nickel intact. The gun is accompanied by a lengthy letter from R.L. Wilson. He has a good deal to say about the rarity and quality of this gun. One of the best guns that I have had. However there are a few sticklers. There is two factory letters on this gun. They show that the gun was shipped twice. Once as a 7-1/2" nickel gun to Hartley & Graham and once as a blued frame gun 10 years later to a firm in St. Paul Minnesota. This gun is no doubt a factory show or exhibition gun. It is in the 32k serial range which a number of these are in. Also one thing that Larry Wilson pointed out is the hammer and ejector rod housing are very professional replacements. The engraving matches. I missed it completely but Wilson didn't. Other than that it is an outstanding gun even with those flaws. The engraving is fare superior to anything I have seen Colt do. Call for more details.
Antique $ $75,000 sale pending.
