Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
Approximately 750,000 Winchester Model 1873 guns were manufactured, starting in 1873. They were introduced alongside Winchester's new .44-40 caliber ammunition. This new centerfire round was more powerful than Winchester's earlier .44 rimfire round. As a result, the brass frame of the Model 1866 was upgraded to a stronger steel frame. The '73 was available in a rifle, carbine or musket configuration. Dozens of variations were available, which makes the Winchester '73 a fun gun to collect. The production is broken into three main categories: first, second and third model. Of the three models, production of the Third Model greatly outnumbers First and Second Models. One thing that makes collecting Winchester guns interesting is that variations tend to be introduced over a transitional period, rather than at a specific start and stop date. The way to identify the various models relates to how the dustcover is attached, and the arrangement of screws behind the trigger. The earliest Winchester '73's had no caliber marking, because initially they all used .44-40 ammo, also known as .44 WCF. As other calibers were introduced later, it became necessary to mark the caliber on all guns. The 73 rifle was eventually available in .44, .38 and .32 calibers. A few were also made in .22 caliber, however, the mechanism of the Model 1890 Winchester proved to be more reliable for handling the small .22 caliber rounds.

44 WCF caliber. 24" octagon bbl. with full mag and crescent butt. Beech’s combination front sight with standard rear sight. Receiver is engraved with a scroll/floral motif and has vignette of a running deer on left side plate. Elevator has a small scroll motif. Bbl and magazine tube are a silver-gray patina overall. Receiver has a dark brown patina. Bore is not so good. Dark with light rifling. Set trigger does not work. Hammer does not stay on half cock. Trigger needs repair to make it work properly. The checkering on the wood is visible, but very worn. XXX wood is dark brown and very sun-dried and checked. Also a little shy at the wrist area. W937 SPECIAL ORDER WINCHESTER 1873 RIFLE
Item # W937
44 WCF caliber 2nd Model 1873. The whole gun has been cleaned and only has traces of original blue in the protected areas. The rifle's special order features include a 26 inch round barrel and a shotgun butt. Bore is good with strong rifling and moderate pitting throughout. Forearm has a crack on each side in front of the receiver. Otherwise wood is sound. Action is crisp, and with the good bore, this would be a good shooter for cowboy reenactment shooting, or just all around fun. Still collectable with the rare features. An early gun made in 1882. Includes factory letter.

W930 RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 NICKEL TRAPPER SRC
Item # W930
.44 WCF caliber. Full nickel finish with rare 15″ barrel and half magazine. Has reverse mounted, 1873 marked ladder rear sight. This fine Trapper has what I believe to be strong original nickel on the barrel with just slightly less on the frame. Nice shine in the protected areas around the side plates and saddle ring. Bore is also bright and shiny with scattered lite roughness. Hammer has case colors present. Crisp action. Stock has a hairline crack off the top tang and a chip at the heel with other nicks, dings & scratches. Otherwise solid. Complete with factory letter that states this carbine with 15″ bbl, 1/2 magazine, received in warehouse Aug 26, 1882 and shipped the same day with 99 other Model 1873’s to order number 34775. While 1873 carbines are somewhat prolific, 15″ examples are quite rare and of those extremely few had nickel finish. The majority of trapper carbines were sold into Central & South America and those few that have been repatriated to the U.S. are most often found in extremely worn condition with little or no orig finish. The fact that this was a shipment of 100 Winchesters supports the supposition that it was a shipment to South or Central America. A very rare carbine for the advanced Winchester collector.

Wood is VG, still being proud to the metal and most varnish remains except at the carry point at the rear of the forearm. Original sights. Crisp action. Scabbard is leather covered with brass throat & tip. Bayonet blade is marked on the left ricasso with a crown/”C” and right ricasso a “B”. The barrel, mag tube and receiver are all a grey/brown patina with traces of original blue in the protected areas. The bore is pretty rough with pitting throughout. The lever has some droop as well. Original sights, dust cover and saddle ring. Wood is sound with some shrinkage and the usual amount of wear. The left sideplate is marked “VERNEY & COBERT 21 PERU BUENOS AIRES”. Also comes with a copy of a Cody Firearm’s Museum letter which identifies this carbine with saber bayonet, received in warehouse Nov 13, 1876 and shipped next day with 5 other arms to order number 7570. Also copies of a page from Winchester’s New Model of 1873: A Tribute, Gordon which pictures this exact carbine & bayonet, identified by SN. Obviously part of a shipment to Argentina. It is unknown how many of these carbines were manufactured, but very few have ever surfaced. Even in this condition, this is still a very rare Winchester SRC with the saber bayonet that letters! 44 cal. Standard configuration musket with 30" bbl and a near excellent bore! Nearly all bbl blue remains. The rest of the blue is quite nice with the exception of the right side in front of the loading gate where it is a brown color. Very nice case colors on the lever and hammer. Wood is also exceptional being nice fitting and just a few handling marks. Original musket sights. Comes with original 5-piece cleaning rod in the buttstock.

W351 44 CAL WINCHESTER 1873 SRC
Item # W351
The caliber that everyone wants, 44-40. This gun has seen quite a bit of Western use. Mostly a grey/brown color on the metal. Dings and scratches, pitting on the bbl. The bbl address is very readable. Receiver has relatively smooth metal with a medium brown patina on it. The dust cover rail has been cut. For use of another sight? If they did use it for this, they would have to take the dust cover off. Three leaf flip sight on the bbl. Bore is about what a person would expect, decent rifling, roughness pretty much throughout. A couple spots of pitting. Overall good bore. Wood blends together as being about the same condition as the rest of the gun. Typical light crack coming off the forearm wood, dings, gouges, scratches etc but fit is pretty good. Old gun has seen some use but its still a good old Winchester.
Antique $ 3,500.
W333 GOOD LOOKING WINCHESTER 1873 44 CALIBER

A little more brown color to the side plate but otherwise pretty nice blue. Some oxidation and light pitting on the upper part of the frame and on the dust cover. Bbl is mostly an aged brown with some blue in protected areas. Some light freckling. This has a 24" round bbl with good to very good bore. Equipped with full length magazine and crescent buttplate. Buttstock fit and condition is very good. The forearm likewise, does not have the crack seen on most of these. All in all a good honest 1873 with the big advantage of being a 44 cal.

W354 SCARCE WINCHESTER 1873 WITH 28 INCH BBL
Item # W354
The good news is as stated, it has the scarce longer bbl, but the bad news being the bore isn't too good. Will need a lot of cleaning. Caliber 32WCF. Quite a bit of wear to the finish on the bbl being mostly light brown grey with a mix in of blue. Pretty much the same on the receiver. Good honest antique color to it. Standard front and rear sights, sight elevator on the rear is a replacement. Wood is pretty good on the gun, fit to the frame is very acceptable. One oddity to the stock is a six sided star embedded into the right hand side of the stock and on it is patent January 17, 1878. They did a nice job of the in-letting, what it means ??

W504 RARE 1ST MODEL WINCHESTER 1873 MUSKET
Item # W504
This is an early 1st Model Musket made in 1876 with standard 30 inch barrel and 3 barrel bands. Only about 500 of these were mfg. Not only is it rare, it is in fine condition with most original receiver blue remaining. All barrel blue is present with slight thinning. Traces of case color remain on the hammer and lever, butt plate is mostly silvered out. Bore has good shine with deep rifling and just a few light pits. Wood is good on forearm with just the usual small dings that you would expect to see on a 140 year old gun. Stock is good with a little figure showing on the left side. There is a small hair line crack coming off the upper tang next to the screw. This musket appears to have been made from a carbine frame with the saddle ring holes plugged with screws. This musket has been over seas judging from the British proof marks on the barrel and frame. Over all this is a very fine rare old Winchester for the collectors looking to fill a hole in their collection.

W208 VERY RARE WINCHESTER 1873 SHORT RIFLE
Item # W208
A 14" oct bbl in 44 cal. As with most short rifles or trappers, this one has seen some use. The receiver is a pleasing chocolate brown color with old pitting that is in-bedded into the finish. That part actually looks pretty good. The dust cover is missing. A lot of wear to the bbl. The edges of the octagons are even rounded somewhat. There is a replacement Marbles rear sight and standard German silver front sight. The mag tube is full length. A newer screw is at the end of the mag tube. There was some work done under the mag tube on the bbl. The hanger is there in the dove tail. This gun does have the correct short forearm wood. Buttstock is a bit rough but I have seen worse. W859 VERY INTERESTING WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SRC
Item # W859 -26-56
This gun appears to have been hit on the buttplate by a bullet. There is a chip out of the stock that has been replaced. Also a big chip out of the buttplate measuring about 3/4" X 1/2". A bullet is the only logical explanation. The repair was done in a crude fashion and has since aged considerably. Overall metal is an aged plum/brown patina. Some pin prick rust here and there. Traces of blue in protected areas. Dark bore would benefit from a good cleaning. Correct dust cover. Buttstock is pretty much sound except where the repair has been made. Late markings. Correct ladder rear sight. Very interesting Western type gun that I'm sure saw some action!
