Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
Approximately 750,000 Winchester Model 1873 guns were manufactured, starting in 1873. They were introduced alongside Winchester's new .44-40 caliber ammunition. This new centerfire round was more powerful than Winchester's earlier .44 rimfire round. As a result, the brass frame of the Model 1866 was upgraded to a stronger steel frame. The '73 was available in a rifle, carbine or musket configuration. Dozens of variations were available, which makes the Winchester '73 a fun gun to collect. The production is broken into three main categories: first, second and third model. Of the three models, production of the Third Model greatly outnumbers First and Second Models. One thing that makes collecting Winchester guns interesting is that variations tend to be introduced over a transitional period, rather than at a specific start and stop date. The way to identify the various models relates to how the dustcover is attached, and the arrangement of screws behind the trigger. The earliest Winchester '73's had no caliber marking, because initially they all used .44-40 ammo, also known as .44 WCF. As other calibers were introduced later, it became necessary to mark the caliber on all guns. The 73 rifle was eventually available in .44, .38 and .32 calibers. A few were also made in .22 caliber, however, the mechanism of the Model 1890 Winchester proved to be more reliable for handling the small .22 caliber rounds.
W1608 1873 WINCHESTER MUSKET WITH BAYONET

Very fine cond gun with 90%+ blue on the receiver. Just some wear at the carry spot and high spots. Bbl has aging blue that is beginning to turn. Nice address and 44 cal marking. As with a lot of muskets, this one has a near perfect bore. The rest of the gun fits in cond. Wood is nice fitting and good overall with no cracks or losses. Musket ladder sight. Bayonet is in the white with some age spots. VG overall. If you don't have a 73 musket, this would be a dandy for filling a collection.

W1609 VERY INTERESTING WINCHESTER MUSKET
Item # W1609
This musket has "London Armory Curren Company" on the side plate. Also several markings on the right side of the stock including the Curren company and their address Queen Victoria London. There is also some rack marks. I do not know what they were for. Also in large letters " U S S CO" and a couple of numbers. This was some sort of a rack gun for some security outfit or facility. It has the normal British proof marks. Gun is VG with good bbl blue. Some light freckling at the muzzle. Light pin pricking in spots. Receiver has 90%+ aging blue. Some scratches and mars. A lot of these company rack guns didn't get a lot of use and this one didn't. Nice tight action and excellent bore. High condition interesting 73 musket!

W694a 1873 WINCHESTER SHORT RIFLE
Item # W694a
This rare 16" Short Rifle looks as though it has had a very rough life. Maybe dragged behind a truck? The bore also looks like 16" of gravel road! The metal on the frame is a little pitted. The wood is rough. Dust cover is a replacement. Butt plate is loose. The gun letters as a carbine. A lot of short rifles and carbines went to South America. Most likely came back across the border in pieces with a batch of other guns. When they were reassembled, someone wasn't paying attention. 44 WCF. 16" OBFM. If you are looking for an old Winchester with a story to tell, this is the wall hanger for you.

W1279 WINCHESTER 1873 SRC IN 38 WCF
Item # W1279
This old Winchester has that "Cowboy Carbine" look to it! If this gun could only talk. It appears to have had a repair done to the forearm with a piece of brass, but they didn't stop there with the brass decorations. There are some more brass pieces on the stock. Cowboy customizing no doubt. The receiver is a brown patina with traces of blue around the side plates. Barrel and mag tube are also brown. Good smooth metal and good wood except for repaired crack. The bore is a little rough. Looks like a replacement saddle ring. Not a bad looking 123 year old gun. 1873 SRC's in 38 WCF are very hard to find, and this one has lots of character.

This is the one everybody is looking for. 44 cal 1873 with full mag. Nice clean metal is aging to a pleasing medium brown patina. There is some age spots, mostly on the bbl towards the muzzle. All good markings. Typical ladder 1873 sight. About the only detraction is some lightly applied initials on the left side. Barely visible at arms length. For a saddle ring the wood isn't too bad. Nice fit. Normal dings but no heavy gouges, cracks or missing wood. Forearm is above average since is does not have the normal crack. Bore is at least good with nice rifling and shiny. This is a decent example of a 73 saddle ring.

W859 VERY INTERESTING WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SRC
Item # W859 -24-47
This gun appears to have been hit on the buttplate by a bullet. There is a chip out of the stock that has been replaced. Also a big chip out of the buttplate measuring about 3/4" X 1/2". A bullet is the only logical explanation. The repair was done in a crude fashion and has since aged considerably. Overall metal is an aged plum/brown patina. Some pin prick rust here and there. Traces of blue in protected areas. Dark bore would benefit from a good cleaning. Correct dust cover. Buttstock is pretty much sound except where the repair has been made. Late markings. W681 WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 44 SRC
Item # W681-24-51
Nice action with a fair to good bore. Bad new on this gun is that it has had some use and abuse. All the metal has been painted a flat black. Stock is some kind of a modified stock but it does fit quite well. Also it has seen some modifications and is rather short on the top. Saddle ring is present. Dust cover is missing. If you ever wanted a 73 44 SRC for not a lot of money, this is it.

Item # W693A-24-41
Cal 44-40. Action still functions fairly good. Somewhat shiny bore with light to moderate pitting. Decent rifling. Features orig sights. Folding ladder carbine style rear sight that I believe is correct to the gun. Wood shows a fair amount of use with some mars and dings and a crack at the wrist but sound and solid. Forearm has a pretty good gouge out of it. Overall metal has been cleaned. Fair markings. Correct dust cover. These came out of South America in a package with a number of them and they were all disassembled. This gun has a lower tang with factory records indicating it was originally on a 73 carbine.
