Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
The Model 1885 was Winchester's first single shot rifle. It was available in two frame sizes, commonly called "Low Wall" and "High Wall." The small Low Wall frame was primarily used for smaller caliber ammunition, and the larger High Wall frame was primarily for larger calibers. The Model 1885 was considered the hot rod rifle of its day. Every serious shooter had a different secret formula that he thought would give him an edge over the competition, resulting in hundreds of variations for the collector today. It was available in 5 different weights of barrel, marked 1 thru 5 on the underside of the barrel, just forward of the forearm. One popular variation of the Winchester '85 is a 22 caliber musket, which was a military training rifle, known as the Winder Musket.

Someone has added a dovetail in front and put an adjustable front sight that looks definitely factory on it. Also has a folding tang sight, fitted with Winchester style scope blocks and a Stevens scope. Apparently it came from the factory with scope blocks because there were no other sights noted. Extremely fine condition with most all original varnish on the extra fancy Dlx grade checkered wood. A minimal amount of minor mars. With full helm style buttplate. Bbl retains about 99% bright blue with an excellent bore. Receiver has virtually all blue on one side and flaked and turned brown on the upper 1/4" of the frame and maybe 1/2" out on the top of the receiver. W1631 WINCHESTER US MARKED WINDER MUSKET
Item # W1631 -25-79
Standard configuration Winder musket in 22 S. Orig side mounted sight which is correct. Nice rifle in good overall cond. About 70% receiver blue. Worn on upper tang to an aged brown. Behind the hammer is the US marking with the flaming bomb. Bbl also has a lot of blue with some wear towards the muzzle mostly on the left side. Looking at the bore cond which is near excellent and the stock it is obvious this gun has seen very little use. Sighting the condition and the US marking, this gun would make a very good collectable.

W1493 DELUXE WINCHESTER 1885 HIGH WALL IN CALIBER 30 US
Item # W1493 -25-89
Orig 30" full round #3 bbl. Globe front sight. Typical flat top sporting rear sight and folding Lyman tang sight. This gun is fitted with 3X grade checkered deluxe walnut stock and a cheek piece and rifle style buttplate. Stock seems over-sized. Assembly number matches the lower tang numbers so I believe it to be orig. The Factory Letter lists all the features except it has plain pistol grip checkered stock with hard rubber buttplate. Either an error or it was returned to the factory and fitted with this stock. Definitely matches the rest of the gun. Bbl retains about 90% somewhat toning orig blue. Receiver has 90%+ vivid case color. Excellent mechanics. Nice clean little gun!
Antique $ 9,500.

Receiver does still have some case color showing but most has turned an aged brown/grey. Nice smooth metal. Bbl has some blue remaining with some aging and thinning in spots. Nice markings. Bore is shiny. Good rifling. A couple of moderate pits towards the chamber and some roughness. Overall bore would be good to VG. Nice solid action. Butt stock is VG with typical usage marks. Original 3X grade pistol grip checkered Schuetzen style stock is in excellent condition with most orig lacquer intact, helm buttplate and Dutch pattern cheekpiece. Overall gun is exc with 98% orig bbl blue, 75-80% bright vivid case colors. The Schuetzen rifles with a case colored frame are really quite unusual, they're generally later guns than that; complete with Factory Letter of Authenticity which states, 'no rear sight seat' but this has got a sight dovetail for a rear sight-probably an oversight or somebody put it in at a later time. If that's the case, they did a perfect job. Formerly in the Eldon Owens collection.
