Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
The Model 1885 was Winchester's first single shot rifle. It was available in two frame sizes, commonly called "Low Wall" and "High Wall." The small Low Wall frame was primarily used for smaller caliber ammunition, and the larger High Wall frame was primarily for larger calibers. The Model 1885 was considered the hot rod rifle of its day. Every serious shooter had a different secret formula that he thought would give him an edge over the competition, resulting in hundreds of variations for the collector today. It was available in 5 different weights of barrel, marked 1 thru 5 on the underside of the barrel, just forward of the forearm. One popular variation of the Winchester '85 is a 22 caliber musket, which was a military training rifle, known as the Winder Musket.

Otherwise wood is in good condition. Should make a good plinker for years to come.

W365 DELUXE SPECIAL ORDER WINCHESTER 1885
Item # W365
30 US cal. 30 inch #3 heavy round barrel with almost all original thinning blue remaining. Bore is shiny with strong rifling. Case colored receiver has about 50% fading colors remaining. Single set trigger that works. Combination folding front sight and short range tang sight with a block in the rear dovetail. Dimming colors remain on the butt plate. Case colors present on the hammer and lever. Deluxe extra figure checkered wood with checkered pistol grip on butt stock. Checkering has a few dings and the forearm has a 1/2 inch crack on the right side. Otherwise wood is sound. The unique thing about this rifle is that it doesn't have a serial number on the bottom tang. This is a good looking rifle with a caliber that you can hunt with too.

W278A CUSTOM WINCHESTER HI-WALL WITH SWISS BUTT
Item # W278A
This 1885 has the classical deluxe Schuetzen style stock with the less exaggerated Swiss buttplate. For most shooters this would make it more usable. Wood is beautiful "starburst" dlx wood in VG condition. Some scratches and handling marks. Nice fitting. Forearm wood is also dlx in VG cond also. Nice Vernier mid-height tang site and globe front sight. Bbl also has blocks for Winchester or Lyman scope. Custom with orig Winchester #3 bbl which is now 26". This bbl has been set back evident by the bbl markings being partially obscured by the receiver bridge. Someone did some magnificent high quality work on this bbl in taking a 22 cal bbl (believed to have been) and having it re-bored and re-rifled into a 25 cal. This is a 25 cal "Wildcat" built by someone with talent. We don't know exactly what Wildcat cartridge this is chambered in since that information was lost in time. It is a rim cartridge in a large diameter and not based on 45-70 nor 38-55. A chamber casting would have to be done. With the size of the case, this one will have some punch to it. Another feature is the double-set trigger that works nicely. Lower tang is a replacement that likely was ordered when they built this gun. No serial number. Nearly all metal finish remains. A nice deep blue and very good looking. If you are into Wildcating this would be a dandy!
Antique $ 5,500.
W433A WINCHESTER/STEVENS-POPE 1885 SCHUETZEN RIFLE
Item # W433A
This is a custom built Schuetzen rifle based on a Winchester Lo-Wall action with a Stevens-Pope bbl. This bbl has all the correct bbl markings. Cal 22 Short. 30' oct bbl and equivalent to a Winchester #3 bbl. All bbl blue remains. Inside is just as nice with an excellent bore. The Pope style rifling is very visible. Beautifully done custom wood! Case colored receiver, lever and buttplate. A very intricate rear tang sight. I don't exactly know quite what it is? Normal globe target front sight. Winchester scope blocks which are also case colored and affixed to the bbl. High quality flashy gun!
Antique $ 7,675.
W313 WINCHESTER 1885 SCHUETZEN
Item # W313
30" oct #3 bbl in cal 32-40. This gun is full of "goodies". Quite a rare feature is the take down. Bbl has nearly all blue with some freckling and light oxidation towards the muzzle. Hooded front target sight with spirit level. No provision for a rear sight. This gun has always been equipped with a tang sight. Still decent case colors on the lever. Comes with a palm rest. There were many different varieties available for the Hi-Wall rifle. This one is a quite ornate classical style Schuetzen buttstock with a high comb and a cheek piece. About a medium length Schuetzen buttplate. Wood has some handling marks and is in overall good condition. Good receiver blue. This is a later Hi-Wall being over 100k serial range. Bore is VG overall with just very light roughness which could be leading in front of the chamber.
Modern $ 7,500.
W277A WINCHESTER 1885 HI-WALL SCHUETZEN RIFLE
Item # W277A
22 Short. Equipped with a #3 bbl. As with most Schuetzen rifles this one is set up for target shooting. It has an early unmarked scope with a unique mounting system. It is mounted on Winchester blocks tapped into the bbl. There are 2 extra holes in front of the front block that have been plugged. This gun also has a simple post front sight. Metal condition is VG throughout with nearly all blue remaining on both bbl and receiver. Still some traces of case color on the lever. This is equipped with a double set trigger that does work. Very fancy wood with exaggerated perch belly stock and a Schuetzen buttplate. The Schuetzen buttplate has had the top point or arm removed which makes it much easier to shoulder. Wood condition is near excellent with a few shooting mars and marks. Quite certain this 1885 would be a dandy shooter because it has a near perfect bore.
Modern $ 4,500.
W235 WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SCHUETZEN RIFLE
Item # W235
Wow! Where do I start, a lot going on here. A very beautiful high condition 1885 Schuetzen with deluxe star burst wood and a cheek piece. Original finish to the wood with a couple of usage dings and scratches but very nice condition. The metal also has 90-95% blue remaining on both the receiver and the heavy #4 bbl. Bbl has the proof marks forward so that the Winchester scope blocks do not cover it and evidently done at the factory. There is a Winchester A5 scope attached. There is also a tang sight and an adjustable globe front sight. The list goes on with a double set trigger. Cal 32-40 with a nearly pristine bore. A bit later High Wall in the 110k serial range. If you are serious about a vintage target rifle you need to take a look at this one! Exceptional High Wall!!
Modern $ 9,500.
W395 VERY RARE WINCHESTER HI-WALL
Item # W395
This model 1885 is chambered in the 45 cal Sharps Straight 2-6/10" cartridge. In the records compiled by Porter on the 1885 it shows that only 17 1885's were manufactured in this caliber. Not only rare but it has an exquisite bore! The rest of the gun is exceptional too with most blue remaining on the bbl. Some light wear to the high points of the octagons. Receiver retains about 70% on the right side and a bit less on the left side. Buttstock is in very nice condition. Good fitting. Forearm is also good overall. There is a small chip missing and a light crack. Condition and rarity... this gun has it!
Antique $ 5,775.
W367 WINCHESTER HI-WALL SCHUETZEN
Item # W367
Cal 32-40. 32" #3 oct bbl. Most bbl blue remains with some wear spots and aging. Mounted on the bbl is a Winchester B5 scope. This bbl never was dovetailed for a rear sight. At one time it did have a windage drift front sight and still has a very nice tang sight. Bore is VG to near excellent. Condition continues with about 90% aging blue on the receiver. Case colors on lever and hammer. About a 1 or 2X dlx wood on the stock which is capped off with a nickel plated Schuetzen butt. This Schuetzen butt is not as exaggerated as some that you see. Other accessories are a palm rest and a working set trigger.
Modern $ 5,500.
W366 RARE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL 34” BARREL
Item # W366

W175 EXTREMELY RARE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL WITH NO. 5 BARREL
Item # W175-26-87
This is a deluxe 1885 with a cheek piece and a heavy thick Swiss buttplate. The buttplate has been lightly modified. Also there are special sights on this gun with a mid range Vernier tang sight and a globe front sight with level. Research form shows that this gun originally had a half oct No. 2 bbl. There is also a notation for 2 R&R's back to Winchester. One would conclude that is when the No. 5 heavy bbl was put on. Another thing abut the No. 5 bbl is the matted top finish. A lot of rarities in this bbl. Cal is 32-40. VG bore. Nice rifling. Shiny bore. Could use a cleaning. It appears to have a couple of light areas of pitting in front of the chamber. The riflings do come right down to the chamber. Equipped with a set trigger. This exceptional High Wall is chocked full of special features.
Antique $ 5,575.
W1574 WINCHESTER HIGH WALL MUSKET
Item # 26-108
Chambered in the very desirable 45-70. On top of that, it has a very near excellent bore. Exterior of the bbl is an aged blue with nearly all finish remaining. Light pin pricking on the right half of the muzzle. Standard front sight and a Buffington rear sight. For some reason the 7 has been changed to a 9 so that it reads 45-90 on the bbl. Why? The chambering is actually 45-70 which I checked. Receiver has a nice aged looked with some case colors remaining. It looks like it had a tang sight at one time. Very nice case colors on the upper tang. Overall wood condition is VG. Cleaning rod is present. Comes with a Winchester letter that is dated 1963 and some other notes. A nice looking High Wall and very usable.
Antique $ 4,995.

W1577 EXTREMELY RARE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SMOOTH BORE
Item # W1577-26-119
You heard it right--a smooth bore in 50-EX. This is verified by a Winchester Letter that states "50/110 Express, 20" No. 2 round bbl and smooth bore". Very few high wall's were made in 50 cal and in a smooth bore, likely only a handful if that. Add to that uniqueness, this rifle also has a very good bore. If that's the case, they did a perfect job. Formerly in the Eldon Owens collection.

Approximately 90% bbl blue, some thinning at the muzzle end, nice shiny receiver blue with about 90% remaining as well, good fitting wood, Swiss buttplate, forearm has two very small holes where somebody probably had a palm rest. Sights include Globe front, standard rear and tang, bore is in good cond although there is some roughness. This evidently was somebody's Sunday afternoon target gun. Well cared for, nice gun.
