Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
Approximately 750,000 Winchester Model 1873 guns were manufactured, starting in 1873. They were introduced alongside Winchester's new .44-40 caliber ammunition. This new centerfire round was more powerful than Winchester's earlier .44 rimfire round. As a result, the brass frame of the Model 1866 was upgraded to a stronger steel frame. The '73 was available in a rifle, carbine or musket configuration. Dozens of variations were available, which makes the Winchester '73 a fun gun to collect. The production is broken into three main categories: first, second and third model. Of the three models, production of the Third Model greatly outnumbers First and Second Models. One thing that makes collecting Winchester guns interesting is that variations tend to be introduced over a transitional period, rather than at a specific start and stop date. The way to identify the various models relates to how the dustcover is attached, and the arrangement of screws behind the trigger. The earliest Winchester '73's had no caliber marking, because initially they all used .44-40 ammo, also known as .44 WCF. As other calibers were introduced later, it became necessary to mark the caliber on all guns. The 73 rifle was eventually available in .44, .38 and .32 calibers. A few were also made in .22 caliber, however, the mechanism of the Model 1890 Winchester proved to be more reliable for handling the small .22 caliber rounds.

The bbl address is very readable. Receiver has relatively smooth metal with a medium brown patina on it. The dust cover rail has been cut. For use of another sight? A couple spots of pitting. Overall good bore. Wood blends together as being about the same condition as the rest of the gun. Typical light crack coming off the forearm wood, dings, gouges, scratches etc but fit is pretty good. Old gun has seen some use but its still a good old Winchester.

W354 SCARCE WINCHESTER 1873 WITH 28 INCH BBL
Item # W354

Standard front and rear sights, sight elevator on the rear is a replacement. Wood is pretty good on the gun, fit to the frame is very acceptable. One oddity to the stock is a six sided star embedded into the right hand side of the stock and on it is patent January 17, 1878. They did a nice job of the in-letting, what it means ??

Traces of case color remain on the hammer and lever, butt plate is mostly silvered out. Bore has good shine with deep rifling and just a few light pits. Wood is good on forearm with just the usual small dings that you would expect to see on a 140 year old gun. Stock is good with a little figure showing on the left side. W208 VERY RARE WINCHESTER 1873 SHORT RIFLE
Item # W208
A 14" oct bbl in 44 cal. As with most short rifles or trappers, this one has seen some use. The receiver is a pleasing chocolate brown color with old pitting that is in-bedded into the finish. That part actually looks pretty good. The dust cover is missing. A lot of wear to the bbl. The edges of the octagons are even rounded somewhat. There is a replacement Marbles rear sight and standard German silver front sight. The mag tube is full length. A newer screw is at the end of the mag tube. There was some work done under the mag tube on the bbl. The hanger is there in the dove tail. This gun does have the correct short forearm wood. Buttstock is a bit rough but I have seen worse. Action works well. Bore is fair to good. The rarity factor certainly applies with this gun. ATF papers included.
Antique $ 8,500.
W206 EXTREMELY RARE 1873 SHORT RIFLE
Item # W206
14" oct bbl in 44 cal. Has the correct short forearm wood. Gun blends well in condition having a deep brown patina over all of the metal. Wood is also dark and somewhat oil soaked giving it a very nice look. No dust cover. Comes with a Winchester letter and ATF clearance papers.

W207 VERY RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 14” SHORT RIFLE
Item # W207-26-55
Cal 32. 14" oct bbl which is confirmed with both Winchester and ATF letters. Most short rifles and trappers get used quite hard. This one is probably a bit better than most. All metal is a brown patina with some pitting along the forearm. Orig ladder sight with one ear broken off and missing the slider. Orig German silver front sight. Gun also has a dust cover. The wood is surprisingly a little better than normal. Buttstock is missing a chip on the left side. The usual gouges scratches and dings. Also a couple of letters on the right side that I can't make out what they are. Forearm is the short wood variety and in pretty good shape. One slight hairline crack coming off the front cap and numerous dings and scratches. You aren't buying this gun because it is a beauty queen but because it is very very rare!

This rifle has all the good stuff; 44 cal, oct bbl, full mag and crescent butt! Then add the novelty of being an Atlanta Police gun. Left hand side plate has "124" and "Atlanta Police" inscribed on it. Things must have been pretty quiet in the Atlanta area in the 1890's as this gun has not seen a lot of use. A nice high condition rifle with most blue remaining and aging some. Very nice on both bbl and receiver. Bore is VG+ and may very well hit excellent with a light cleaning. Orig sights. Dust cover is present. Everything on this gun is nice, tight and solid. Comes with Cody Research Form.

Desirable 44 cal. Most finish is an aged brown/grey. Some pitting to the side plate, receiver and bbl. This was a working man's gun and it shows. Has had quite a bit of use. Still functions rather well. Bore is fair to good. Decent rifling, a few spots of pitting and some roughness. Could use a good cleaning. Buttplate is relatively good cond but a bit ill fitting towards the top. Forearm is in relatively good cond. Does have a small crack coming from the front. Bottom tang screw is a replacement. Cal. 38WCF. 24" Rd. barrel with button mag. Shotgun butt. Original sights. Crisp action and a bright shiny bore. Strong blue on barrel and receiver. Some light flaking on left side plate. Strong case colors on the hammer with slightly less colors on the lever. Wood is in great shape and still proud to the metal with no cracks and most original oil finish. Butt plate still has a lot of original blue on it. This fine rifle hasn't seen a lot of use considering it is 133 years old! This gun was not used by the cowboys out on the range. More than likely it stayed out east and was ordered by someone well to do. This would look fine in any Winchester collection.
