Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
Approximately 750,000 Winchester Model 1873 guns were manufactured, starting in 1873. They were introduced alongside Winchester's new .44-40 caliber ammunition. This new centerfire round was more powerful than Winchester's earlier .44 rimfire round. As a result, the brass frame of the Model 1866 was upgraded to a stronger steel frame. The '73 was available in a rifle, carbine or musket configuration. Dozens of variations were available, which makes the Winchester '73 a fun gun to collect. The production is broken into three main categories: first, second and third model. Of the three models, production of the Third Model greatly outnumbers First and Second Models. One thing that makes collecting Winchester guns interesting is that variations tend to be introduced over a transitional period, rather than at a specific start and stop date. The way to identify the various models relates to how the dustcover is attached, and the arrangement of screws behind the trigger. The earliest Winchester '73's had no caliber marking, because initially they all used .44-40 ammo, also known as .44 WCF. As other calibers were introduced later, it became necessary to mark the caliber on all guns. The 73 rifle was eventually available in .44, .38 and .32 calibers. A few were also made in .22 caliber, however, the mechanism of the Model 1890 Winchester proved to be more reliable for handling the small .22 caliber rounds.
W351 44 CAL WINCHESTER 1873 SRC
Item # W351
The caliber that everyone wants, 44-40. This gun has seen quite a bit of Western use. Mostly a grey/brown color on the metal. Dings and scratches, pitting on the bbl. The bbl address is very readable. Receiver has relatively smooth metal with a medium brown patina on it. The dust cover rail has been cut. For use of another sight? If they did use it for this, they would have to take the dust cover off. Three leaf flip sight on the bbl. Bore is about what a person would expect, decent rifling, roughness pretty much throughout. A couple spots of pitting. Overall good bore. Wood blends together as being about the same condition as the rest of the gun. Typical light crack coming off the forearm wood, dings, gouges, scratches etc but fit is pretty good. Old gun has seen some use but its still a good old Winchester.
Antique $ 3,500.

W2149A OUTSTANDING OF THE PERIOD WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 TRAVELING CASE
Item # W2149A
This is exactly like what someone would have used in the Buffalo Bill Wild Show or the 101 Ranch to carry their Winchester in. It is marked Winchester and Model 1873 in a banners on the top of the case. In the center is a Frontiersman with a Bowie knife leaning over a log and shooting at a Grizzly. This an outstanding ornate piece. It has a rounded top. It has some acorns and evergreen sprigs painted on it. Both top and bottom have numerous screws holding it all together. There is what I believe to be a name on the bottom. It is fitted for a 73 rifle. It has somewhat of an amateur lining job. There is some odds and end accoutrements inside such as a Winchester 32 WCF bullet mold and Ideal cleaning kit. For the guy who has the right gun this is the ticket!

Vivid case colors on the hammer and lever. Gun would benefit from a good cleaning. Someone without to much talent has had it in a vise and left mars on the side of the receiver and a few light gouges in the barrel. This one is a bargain!

W2075 WONDERFUL CASED ENGRAVED MODEL 1873 SPECIAL ORDER EXHIBITION RIFLE
Item # W2075
Cal 44-40. This rifle was made for the Paris Exhibition in 1889. It was recently found in South America along with a similar looking gun. That one was an 1886 model with the same style engraving and the same style casing. They were found by a well known Argentina dealer; Hans Schemke. Gun comes complete with Factory Letter noting all the special order features as well as a Letter done by the late R.L. Wilson that details the features, case and accoutrements. This gun was issued the Gran Prix medal at the Paris exhibition and was the only one awarded to an American Arms maker. This medal is included as well some loading tools, cleaning rod, bore light and screwdriver. A sensational gun. Factory letter states that it is a 44-40, full round bbl, button mag, pistol grip deluxe, case hardened and engraved in $4 engraving. It was shipped the same date just before the exhibition and later returned from Paris. From there it must have went to South America because that is where it was recently found. Gun is in great condition with bright vivid original blue remaining on the bbl. Receiver is case hardened that is bright and shiny with slight toning. Engraved on one side is an elk and on the other is a dog. Typical English style engraving but not typical for Winchester. Action is as tight as new. This gun is in 189k range as were all the guns shipped over for the Paris Exhibition. There is a list of about 60 of them and they were all in that range. Some were shipped back, some were sold and some just disappeared. This is a great gun and is cased in a canvas and leather English style case with compartments. Case has been relined and is still in VG condition. A historically significant firearm. One of the best 73's I have had!
Antique $ 85,000.

Wood is good on forearm with just the usual small dings that you would expect to see on a 140 year old gun. Stock is good with a little figure showing on the left side. There is a small hair line crack coming off the upper tang next to the screw. This musket appears to have been made from a carbine frame with the saddle ring holes plugged with screws. W744 RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 FACTORY CUTAWAY
Item # W744
Winchester's factory ledgers list these rare factory cutaway rifles as "skeleton" models. "The Winchester New Model of 1873: A Tribute" lists only eight known examples, and no more than a dozen are believed to have been made. This example, others known, has no serial number and is only marked with the assembly number 4207 on the left side of the lower tang. These cannot be confirmed by factory ledgers, but this example is very similar to the two confirmed examples that appear on the ledgers and are believed to have been used at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Like a few of the other "skeleton" rifles, it is fully nickel plated. None of the known examples are exactly the same. On this example, the cartridge elevator and buttplate door are steel instead of brass. The design allows you to see the inside of the action, the chamber, magazine tube, and even the stock cavity. Though obviously unsafe to fire, the action remains fully functional. It has the standard address, patent, and model markings; German silver blade front sight; and an adjustable sporting rear sight. It has the Third Model style integral guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear indicating it was manufactured around or after 1882. Cutaway rifles were used by Winchester to promote their arms and educate potential buyers. They were used at exhibitions and would have also been used by company salesmen. This example may have been used at one of the World's Fair such as New Orleans in 1884 or Chicago in 1893. Most all of the original nickel plating remains. There is some brown patina on in a few areas where the finish is flaked. The stock and forearm are both fine with a few pressure dents. The oiled finish looks good. The action functions fine and is crisp, and the markings are sharp. With only a dozen or so of these incredibly rare cutaways of the ever popular Winchester Model 1873 this would be a great collectable for the advanced collector or the center piece of a '73 collection.
