Winchester 1873

Approximately 750,000 Winchester Model 1873 guns were manufactured, starting in 1873. They were introduced alongside Winchester's new .44-40 caliber ammunition. This new centerfire round was more powerful than Winchester's earlier .44 rimfire round. As a result, the brass frame of the Model 1866 was upgraded to a stronger steel frame. The '73 was available in a rifle, carbine or musket configuration. Dozens of variations were available, which makes the Winchester '73 a fun gun to collect. The production is broken into three main categories: first, second and third model. Of the three models, production of the Third Model greatly outnumbers First and Second Models. One thing that makes collecting Winchester guns interesting is that variations tend to be introduced over a transitional period, rather than at a specific start and stop date. The way to identify the various models relates to how the dustcover is attached, and the arrangement of screws behind the trigger. The earliest Winchester '73's had no caliber marking, because initially they all used .44-40 ammo, also known as .44 WCF. As other calibers were introduced later, it became necessary to mark the caliber on all guns. The 73 rifle was eventually available in .44, .38 and .32 calibers. A few were also made in .22 caliber, however, the mechanism of the Model 1890 Winchester proved to be more reliable for handling the small .22 caliber rounds.

W1277 RARE WINCHESTER 1873 This gun is true "out of the hen house" cond 1873! Looks like they dusted off the chicken feathers and that's it. Very aged appearance. W1343 WINCHESTER 1873 2ND MODEL SRC

Item # W1343-24-28

W1343 WINCHESTER 1873 2ND MODEL SRC This gun has the "been there done that" look. Fair cond for an old west gun. Carbine ladder sight and standard front sight. Cal 44. 80k serial range. Bbl is a brown color. Must have been a scabbard gun as the bbl address is pretty much worn off. Mag tube has some ripples and dents. The receiver shows heavy signs of use also. Dust cover still in place. The receiver is a grey/brown with some areas of pitting, mostly on the side plates. Wood must be a replacement because it is much better than the metal. 73 SRC's in 44 cal, especially 2nd models, are very desirable and are rarely seen at this price.

W946 EXTREMELY HIGH CONDITION WINCHESTER 1873 SRC

Item # W946-24-12

W946 EXTREMELY HIGH CONDITION WINCHESTER 1873 SRC Very desirable 44 cal. This fine carbine was a "closet queen" and evidently pampered for decades. It is beautiful! Nearly all the blue remains on both receiver and bbl. Dust cover is about the only place where there is blue missing. This is common on 73's in the 500k range. Wood is just about like new. A couple of very light marks on it. Fit is perfect. Case colors remain on the hammer and lever and even decent case colors on the butt plate. This gun has probably been fired but I doubt that it has had even a box of shells through it. Bore is excellent. You could look high and low and it would be difficult to find a higher cond 73 SRC.

W1300 VERY UNIQUE HAND CRAFTED WOODEN 1873 RIFLE

Item # W1300 -24-9

W1300 VERY UNIQUE HAND CRAFTED WOODEN 1873 RIFLE It is truly amazing the craftsmanship that went into this fine decorative piece. The receiver appears to be Walnut. The bbl is a brown color and is stained either an oak or mahogany. Butt stock and forearm is lightly stained oak. We don't know who the artist is but on the bottom is the initials "R L M". On the top of the bbl is "1 of 20". On the bottom is the serial number "7". The lever swings up and down with a latch that works. The dust cover slides. The sight elevator does move. Bbl is 28" and full size in all aspects. I cannot imagine the time and patience it took to craft such a perfect piece! A wonderful display and conversation piece.

W1118 WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 PRESENTATION RIFLE

Item # W1118 -24-27

Thick base tang sight with a 4" staff. Very interesting gun. Gun letters as a 38-40 full oct bbl with sling swivels and a set trigger. However the gun was sent back to the factory several times and on one occasion it received a factory inscription applied on the side plate and butt plate. Side plate and lever have been nickel trimmed. Gun has orig blue and I believe the nickel trim was factory done. Looks perfect. Inscription reads "George W Green Pittsburg PA February 21, 1883". The gun is in the 2nd model serial range at 75k. Excellent + cond. 98% bright vivid blue overall. Side plates and lever have 98% of the nickel intact and have toned to a pleasing patina. Butt plate retains 90% nickel with just a bit of flaking. Correct dust cover. Straight grained walnut stocks are in excellent cond. Very attractive interesting gun!

W947 WINCHESTER 1873 ONE OF ONE THOUSAND FIRST MODEL RIFLE

Item # W947-24-24

W947 WINCHESTER 1873 ONE OF ONE THOUSAND FIRST MODEL RIFLE Serial number 25827. Original 30” full octagon barrel with a full length magazine tube. Beaches combination folding globe front sight. Early first model rear sight as well as a folding tang sight with a 4” staff. This gun was manufactured and shipped with another identical featured 30” only 2 numbers apart. That gun is serial number 25829 and is featured in “The Story of the Winchester 1 of 1000 and 1 of 100 Rifles” by Edmund E Lewis. An excellent book with a lot of research and interesting facts. This was 1 of 11 One of One Thousands that were manufactured with a 30” bbl. There were about 136 total One of One Thousands with only 75-80 that are known survivors. This gun is all original complete with a Factory Letter stating all the features such as rifle, 30” oct bbl, set trigger, checkered stock, case hardened, 1 of 1,000 and shipped from the warehouse March 7, 1877. Two guns to the order. Gun has all the right features for a 25k serial range such as coarse early first model style checkering and the more desirable elaborate One of One Thousand marking on the bbl with a platinum line at the breech as well at the end of the bbl. Elaborate scroll engraving also at the end of the bbl. Straight stock with excellent condition wood. There is some wear to the checkering. No splits or cracks. Rifle style buttplate. A VG bore that would benefit from a good cleaning. Correct first model thumbprint style dust cover. Nice crisp action. All metal is a plum/brown patina with generally sharp corners and good markings. No signs of abuse. Very light cleaning areas on the receiver. Original set trigger functions fine. On the right hand side of the stock is a silver placque that was put on for presentation purposes probably when it was new. It has scroll engraving surrounding an oval motif for an inscription which is unsigned. Very nicely done with a deep lovely patina. Good clean crisp sharp gun! The One of One Thousand is the most desirable gun for any Winchester collector to place in a collection and the hardest to come by. A truly sought after scarce gun. Comes with the original “Wanted Poster” that measures 14” by 17” from when they were trying to locate the One of One Thousands after the movie “Winchester ‘73” came out. A search for the rare guns was done by Steve Hannagan and he chased down about 25 of the 1 of 1,000’s. Also accompanying this gun are two color posters advertising the movie which starred Jimmy Stewart and Shelly Winters. Posters have bright color and sharp corners. All this together would make a fantastic exhibit!! This is a near impossible to find very desirable gun!
