Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
Approximately 750,000 Winchester Model 1873 guns were manufactured, starting in 1873. They were introduced alongside Winchester's new .44-40 caliber ammunition. This new centerfire round was more powerful than Winchester's earlier .44 rimfire round. As a result, the brass frame of the Model 1866 was upgraded to a stronger steel frame. The '73 was available in a rifle, carbine or musket configuration. Dozens of variations were available, which makes the Winchester '73 a fun gun to collect. The production is broken into three main categories: first, second and third model. Of the three models, production of the Third Model greatly outnumbers First and Second Models. One thing that makes collecting Winchester guns interesting is that variations tend to be introduced over a transitional period, rather than at a specific start and stop date. The way to identify the various models relates to how the dustcover is attached, and the arrangement of screws behind the trigger. The earliest Winchester '73's had no caliber marking, because initially they all used .44-40 ammo, also known as .44 WCF. As other calibers were introduced later, it became necessary to mark the caliber on all guns. The 73 rifle was eventually available in .44, .38 and .32 calibers. A few were also made in .22 caliber, however, the mechanism of the Model 1890 Winchester proved to be more reliable for handling the small .22 caliber rounds.

W2082 UNUSUAL WINCHESTER DELUXE 73
Item # W2082
This gun was probably made for a child or a woman. It is a special order extra rapid taper 1/2 oct bbl 22" in length. At the muzzle it measures just under 6/10 of an inch. A normal 32-20 would probably be a little over 76/100 of an inch. Quite a bit smaller than standard and I have never seen another one like it. Correct short rifle forearm. Factory Letter states all these features including the checkered pistol grip stock with shotgun butt. I removed the buttplate to view and there are 3 large holes where they reduced weight on the stock. Factory Letter states 7-1/4 lbs hence the hollowed out stock which also measures only 12-1/4". Original Factory work. Buttplate fits perfectly. Excellent condition with most orig stock varnish on 3X grade wood. Sharp checkering. Bbl retains about 90% blue having toned very slightly. Receiver is in excellent condition with about 40% case colors that are turning from vivid to a more silver color. Crisp tight action. Orig dust cover. A very unusual gun. W744 RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 FACTORY CUTAWAY
Item # W744
Winchester's factory ledgers list these rare factory cutaway rifles as "skeleton" models. "The Winchester New Model of 1873: A Tribute" lists only eight known examples, and no more than a dozen are believed to have been made. This example, others known, has no serial number and is only marked with the assembly number 4207 on the left side of the lower tang. These cannot be confirmed by factory ledgers, but this example is very similar to the two confirmed examples that appear on the ledgers and are believed to have been used at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Like a few of the other "skeleton" rifles, it is fully nickel plated. None of the known examples are exactly the same. On this example, the cartridge elevator and buttplate door are steel instead of brass. The design allows you to see the inside of the action, the chamber, magazine tube, and even the stock cavity. Though obviously unsafe to fire, the action remains fully functional. It has the standard address, patent, and model markings; German silver blade front sight; and an adjustable sporting rear sight. It has the Third Model style integral guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear indicating it was manufactured around or after 1882. Cutaway rifles were used by Winchester to promote their arms and educate potential buyers. They were used at exhibitions and would have also been used by company salesmen. This example may have been used at one of the World's Fair such as New Orleans in 1884 or Chicago in 1893. Most all of the original nickel plating remains. There is some brown patina on in a few areas where the finish is flaked. The stock and forearm are both fine with a few pressure dents. The oiled finish looks good. The action functions fine and is crisp, and the markings are sharp. With only a dozen or so of these incredibly rare cutaways of the ever popular Winchester Model 1873 this would be a great collectable for the advanced collector or the center piece of a '73 collection.
Antique $ 27,500.

The bore is about good with scttered light pitting throughtout. There is an extra hole in the upper tang. The wood is in very nice condition with minimal handleing marks. W504 RARE 1ST MODEL WINCHESTER 1873 MUSKET
Item # W504-27-54
This is an early 1st Model Musket made in 1876 with standard 30 inch barrel and 3 barrel bands. Only about 500 of these were mfg. Not only is it rare, it is in fine condition with most original receiver blue remaining. All barrel blue is present with slight thinning. Traces of case color remain on the hammer and lever, butt plate is mostly silvered out. Bore has good shine with deep rifling and just a few light pits. Wood is good on forearm with just the usual small dings that you would expect to see on a 140 year old gun. Stock is good with a little figure showing on the left side. There is a small hair line crack coming off the upper tang next to the screw. This musket appears to have been made from a carbine frame with the saddle ring holes plugged with screws. This musket has been over seas judging from the British proof marks on the barrel and frame. Over all this is a very fine rare old Winchester for the collectors looking to fill a hole in their collection.

W80 VERY FINE SPECIAL ORDER 2ND MODEL 1873 WINCHESTER RIFLE
Item # W80-27-45
Cal. 38WCF. 24" Rd. barrel with button mag. Shotgun butt. Original sights. Crisp action and a bright shiny bore. Strong blue on barrel and receiver. Some light flaking on left side plate. Strong case colors on the hammer with slightly less colors on the lever. Wood is in great shape and still proud to the metal with no cracks and most original oil finish. Butt plate still has a lot of original blue on it. This fine rifle hasn't seen a lot of use considering it is 133 years old! This gun was not used by the cowboys out on the range. More than likely it stayed out east and was ordered by someone well to do. This would look fine in any Winchester collection.
Antique $ 8,750.
W859 VERY INTERESTING WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SRC
Item # W859 -27-56
This gun appears to have been hit on the buttplate by a bullet. There is a chip out of the stock that has been replaced. Also a big chip out of the buttplate measuring about 3/4" X 1/2". A bullet is the only logical explanation. The repair was done in a crude fashion and has since aged considerably. Overall metal is an aged plum/brown patina. Some pin prick rust here and there. Traces of blue in protected areas. Dark bore would benefit from a good cleaning. Correct dust cover. Buttstock is pretty much sound except where the repair has been made. Late markings. Correct ladder rear sight. Very interesting Western type gun that I'm sure saw some action!
Antique $ 2,500.
