Merz Antique Firearms ~ Catalog of Old Guns and Related Items
The Model 1885 was Winchester's first single shot rifle. It was available in two frame sizes, commonly called "Low Wall" and "High Wall." The small Low Wall frame was primarily used for smaller caliber ammunition, and the larger High Wall frame was primarily for larger calibers. The Model 1885 was considered the hot rod rifle of its day. Every serious shooter had a different secret formula that he thought would give him an edge over the competition, resulting in hundreds of variations for the collector today. It was available in 5 different weights of barrel, marked 1 thru 5 on the underside of the barrel, just forward of the forearm. One popular variation of the Winchester '85 is a 22 caliber musket, which was a military training rifle, known as the Winder Musket.

Most bbl finish remains and is aging. Nice smooth metal. Globe style front, standard rear and Vernier tang sight. Visible case colors remain on the frame. Wood blends nicely with rest of the gun as being VG. A couple of scrapes and gouges but overall VG. To top it off it has a VG bore and an early serial number. A very rare Winchester! There is a bbl blank on the rear dovetail. There is holes drilled on the bbl for an early style scope. Replacement front sight. The big thing about this gun is that the bbl has been re-sleeved and re-chambered into 22 Hornet. A nice professional job was done. This musket has about 90%+ bbl blue remaining with just a couple of wear spots. The receiver also has very nice blue. Buttstock matches the cond of the gun in being VG. Bore is near excellent. W1642 WINCHESTER THICK SIDE HIGH WALL 50 CALIBER
Item # W1642
This is chambered in the big bore cal of 50 Eley. Gun was originally exported to Walter Locke and Co. Calcutta India. These markings are on the bbl along with 7879 and proof marks. This rifle has been used, perhaps in a harrowing hunt for lions or other large and dangerous game. Most of the usage is in the wood. There is a wear pattern on the forearm . Could be from riding on a camel or some sort of saddle. The buttstock also has some wear. There is a chunk out behind the comb. I don't know if it was chipped and someone tried to file it flat or if it was done on purpose. But again, surprisingly, most of the wood is there. Some shrinkage and a little shy at the tangs. Metal is all grey and has been cleaned some time ago. Smooth metal on the frame. Bbl also is nice metal but does exhibit dings and scratches that match the forearm wear. This was a tool and taken care of as far as the bore. Nice rifling. Good overall cond. Some light pitting towards the chamber and some light roughness. A rare gun and there are very few in 50 Eley. Very fairly priced.
Antique $ 2,950.
W1577 EXTREMELY RARE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL SMOOTH BORE
Item # W1577
You heard it right--a smooth bore in 50-EX. This is verified by a Winchester Letter that states "50/110 Express, 20" No. 2 round bbl and smooth bore". Very few high wall's were made in 50 cal and in a smooth bore, likely only a handful if that. Add to that uniqueness, this rifle also has a very good bore. A good looking rifle with your normal aged color. Mostly a medium to light brown/grey aging patina. Nice smooth metal. Good fitting wood. Winchester Letter accompanies this gun.
Modern $ 12,500.

Nice fitting. No cracks or losses. The 303 British would be a great cal in a 85 and you would be one of the very few to have one since there were only somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 made in this caliber. A good collectable that would grace any 1885 collection.
Modern $ 6,650.

Someone has added a dovetail in front and put an adjustable front sight that looks definitely factory on it. Extremely fine condition with most all original varnish on the extra fancy Dlx grade checkered wood. A minimal amount of minor mars. With full helm style buttplate. Bbl retains about 99% bright blue with an excellent bore. Receiver has virtually all blue on one side and flaked and turned brown on the upper 1/4" of the frame and maybe 1/2" out on the top of the receiver. 1885 LOW WALL WINCHESTER RIFLE IN 25 CALIBER STEVENS
Item # W39-25-94
24" full octagon #1 bbl with an exc bore, originally was 22L. Interesting marking on bbl says "Rebored and Rifled by J. Stevens A&T Co." Barrel was factory reblued at that time and retains 95% heavy blue. Orig wood has a few light handling mars but is in generally near excellent with most orig varnish. Rifle style buttplate retains a considerable amount of case colors. Nice, clean, unique little gun complete with Lyman blade front and a very scarce series 62 folding Lyman tang sights.
Antique $ 2,975.
VERY UNIQUE SMOOTH BORE WINCHESTER HIGH WALL, 2-BARREL SET
Item # 8551-25-90
Featuring a 26 20 Gauge shotgun bbl and a 30" .38-55 Smooth Bore bbl. This set is photographed in John Campbell's second Winchester Single Shot book and is the only set that I know of that is comprised of two different shot cartridge bbls. Overall gun is in exc cond with the 38-55 bbl retaining 98% bright shiny orig blue and an exc bore. The 20 Gauge bbl has a few very minor frecklings from bad storage but still retains almost all the blue with an exc bore. Matching wood on the two forearms and buttstock are in exc cond with a very few light handling mars; complete with correct shotgun style buttplate. Receiver finish is probably about 75% with some flaking and toning on one side but still crisp and sharp with no signs of pits. Guaranteed all orig. 113,XXX serial number range-too high to get a Letter but on close examination by taking it apart, the inside work numbers match on both barrels.
Modern $ 16,500.
8274 WINCHESTER BRITISH PROOFED LOW-WALL RIFLE IN 22 LONG RIFLE CALIBER
Item # 8274-25-88
Approximately 90% bbl blue, some thinning at the muzzle end, nice shiny receiver blue with about 90% remaining as well, good fitting wood, Swiss buttplate, forearm has two very small holes where somebody probably had a palm rest. Sights include Globe front, standard rear and tang, bore is in good cond although there is some roughness. This evidently was somebody's Sunday afternoon target gun. Well cared for, nice gun.
Modern $ 3,100.
