SPECTACULAR NIMSCHKE ENGRAVED 1866 RIFLE

Cal 44 rimfire. This gun is in the 28,XXX serial range and is pictured on page 56 of the Winchester Engraving book. This gun is one of the finest engraved 66's that have surfaced to date. Accompanying this gun is a letter from a previous owner dated October 31, 1950 to Winchester. The guy who was in possession of it assumed that it was a One of One Thousand. He wrote Winchester asking for details and they informed him it was not a 1 of 1000; interesting little note that accompanies the gun. It is believed that the lady engraved in the oval panel on the left side of the receiver is the same likeness as the Bust of Columbia which appears the 15 cent US fractional currency note. Both are believed to have been done by the hand of Nimschke. A spectacular gun in extraordinary condition with 90% bright glossy blue, fine case colors on the hammer and lever. Piano style glossy finish stock in excellent condition with only a few minor handling marks. Rifle style buttplate is also engraved. Receiver was originally gold gilded with a considerable amount of gold remaining in the engraving cuts. When light hits the receiver, the gold really stands out. This is a SPECTACULAR gun! The balance of receiver coloration is a beautiful aged butterscotch patina. This gun has been in a number of very famous collections. Shortly after it was discovered by Winchester from the earlier mentioned owner, it became the property of Elmer Taylor, a well known West Coast gun collector. Then more recently for about 30 years it was in the collection of Doug Bennett, a California collector who displayed this gun in a number of shows with his award winning Winchesters and Henrys. Then it went to Wes Adams who owned it briefly. Adams owned the finest Winchester collection in the past 50 years but has since passed on. An outstanding gun! Guaranteed original and untouched complete with a 15 cent note.
