W4223 FIRST MODEL WINCHESTER HOTCHKISS BOLT ACTION SPORTING RIFLE IN CALIBER 45-70; The 1883 Hotchkiss was the first bolt action designed for the U.S. military 45-70 cartridge. 26 inch octagon barrel and action show about 70% finish starting to turn brown with the receiver having series of small dents near the rear on the top right side. The bright and shiny bore is near excellent with strong rifling. Sights include a German silver blade front, a sporting rear and graduated tang sight with a replacement slide and aperture. Checkered straight grip walnut stock is solid showing just normal wear and handling marks. Features a Turned Down bolt handle, a horn forend cap and a smooth steel shotgun style buttplate. Includes a factory letter stating it was made in 1879. There were only 6,419 First Model rifles made with the magazine cut off and safety control incorporated into one unit. A seldom encountered Winchester bolt action rifle.
