M1143 EAGLEHEAD NEW YORK MILITIA OFFICER’S SWORD; 31 inch nearly straight blade. Blade is finished in blue and gold gilt etching and retains about half of those finishes. Hilt is gold washed with carved ivory grip and shield shaped langets that bear the New York state crest of an eagle with wings spread atop a globe and thirteen stars above. Knuckle-bow is in the reverse P pattern and is heavily ornamented with leaf designs. Scabbard is gilded brass and the front side is engraved with florals, an eagle perched on a U.S. Shield and an 8-pointed star. Three carrying rings are present, one on either side of the throat and one at the middle band. This sword is identical to #103 in Peterson’s “The American Sword”.
