Description

W4361 AMERICAN EXPRESS Co. MARKED WINCHESTER MODEL 1887 LEVER-ACTION SHOTGUN; The Winchester Model 1887 was the worlds first successful repeating shotgun. It was designed by John Browning for Winchester. The accompanying factory letter lists this rare, historically significant shotgun with a 20 inch barrel in 12 gauge, carbine sling rings and factory inscribed “Am. Ex. Co. #1”. This gun is actually factory inscribed “Am. Ex. Co. 2”. This must have be a book keeping or logging error as there is no question this is an original factory inscription. As an authentic American Express Co. survivor, the overall condition shows lots of character from the years of rugged reliable service. All metal surfaces show a dark mottled patina. The barrel has been shortened slightly from its original length of 20 inches to 19 1/4 inches. The receiver has the standard “WRACO” monogram and factory saddle ring and bar on the left side and the original factory inscription “Am. Ex. Co. 2” on the right side. The lower tang has the four-line address/patent dates marking. The pistol grip stock is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate. The forearm and buttstock show similar “frontier issue” character. Mechanically fine. A real piece of Old West history rarely encountered!
