W4358 NEW HAVEN ARMS Co VOLCANIC NO. 2 NAVY PISTOL WITH 6 INCH BARREL; Scarce Navy size Volcanic with rare 6 inch octagon barrel chambered in 41 Volcanic caliber with a mostly bright shiny bore with a few scattered pits and distinct rifling. Barrel and magazine tube are a gray/brown patina. Top flat of the barrel is lightly marked “PATENT FEB. 14. 1854” over “NEW HAVEN CONN”. Sights include a brass post front and a V-notch dovetailed rear. Hammer and lever have faint traces of case colors. Brass frame has some very light scratches on the left side. Nice tight fitting side plates. The follower head is absent. Walnut grips are both numbered to the gun and are in good condition with a hairline crack on the left grip. A fair amount of original varnish remains with some light handling wear. Mechanically fine. The No. 2 Volcanic Navy pistols came in a 6-inch and an 8-inch barrel length chambered in .41 caliber. The 6-inch model was often referred to as the “Belt” model while the 8-inch was known as the “Holster” model. Only about 300 of these rare pistols were produced 1857-1860.
