MERZ102 BEAUTIFULLY DONE WHITMORE BUGGY RIFLE; Documents link this to President William McKinley. Unfortunately, President McKinley was assassinated before receiving this rifle and it was then purchased by a member of the Collins family. This gun is in excellent condition with most bright nickel remaining. Very fancy sights and a detachable shoulder stock. Comes with an of the period case that shows some wear. This is one of the fanciest Buggy Rifles I’ve ever seen. Walnut grips are in very good condition. Barrel is chambered for 35 CF. 24-3/4 inch step down style barrel with a full length rib. Small delicately done 3 inch wood forearm matches the grips. 2 ebony inlays in the forearm. This one you have to see to appreciate the engraving. It is very well done and elaborately done. The delicate barrel is rapid taper. It is fitted in a wood case and includes the cleaning rod. Case has brass hardware. The woolen lining has been eaten by moths and should be relined. This is the only Whitmore I have seen in this style. No serial number and could well be the only one manufactured. This gun was in the Collection of Eldon Owens who was well known for collecting buggy rifles. I had a conversation with him and this was one of his favorite rifles in his collection. He had a fantastic collection of a variety of Makers and had collected only the best.
