W4162 WINCHESTER PROTOTYPE MODEL 1902 SINGLE SHOT PISTOL ATTRIBUTED TO U.S. ARMY GENERAL ABEL DAVIS; Caliber 22 Short and Long. 11 inch barrel with a bright shiny bore and a good amount of original finish remaining. It has standard Model 1902 rifle markings on the barrel, Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and bolt, and is fitted with blade front and notch rear sights. Mechanically excellent. The stock is in very good condition and has beautiful floral carving on each side as well as the back and on the butt. There is a signed statement by Mr. John Abel Davis, the grandson of General Davis, that says this pistol was presented by Winchester Firearms to his grandfather General Abel Davis who was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross and Medal for actions in World War I. He states that this pistol has remained in the family’s possession and was passed from his Grandfather to his Father and then to himself in 1969. There is also a printed blog outlining the life of the General.
This serial number 3 is one of an estimated 100 prototypes based on the Model 1900/1902 rifle action during the early 1900’s. Gerorge Madis writes about these prototypes on page 279 of “The Winchester Handbook” which accompanies the pistol.
