Description
W4352 RARE OPEN TOP WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 RIFLE IN 44 WCF; More scarce than a 1 of 1000! This is one of only 55 known ‘Open Top’ Model 1873’s made without a dust cover. It’s listed in the ‘OPEN TOP SURVEY’ in “WInchester’s New Model Of 1873 A Tribute” by James D. Gordon. The survey shows, of all known Open Tops, this is the common configuration to have been made; 24 inch octagon barrel full length magazine. Set trigger. The receiver made without any accommodations for a dust cover. Walnut forearm and straight grip stock fit with crescent rifle trapdoor buttplate. All known Open Top guns are in the 27,000 serial number range which overlap the estimated production of 30,000 First Models. By all observations the open top guns are built on second model frames having the trigger pin visible through the side of the receiver, but without dust covers. The survey shows there were even six open top guns converted/upgraded with second model style dust covers at the factory. Overall condition is good showing faint traces of original finish with the balance mostly a smooth gray brown patina having few scattered dings and patches of light pitting. Action is mechanically sound. Stocks are solid with some scattered minor handling marks and the forearm having been lightly sanded and re-oiled. Manufactured in 1877, this is a VERY scarce and hard to find gun complete with a factory letter.
ANTIQUE $ 7,950.
